   Forget about the city, it's 'S [21/02 02:28AM]

They were the sassy 30-something women who put the sex into shopping, shoes and socialising.

But New York fashionistas Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones et al apparently have nothing on their friskier colleagues in the Forest Gucci News Fake of Dean.

That's according to a group of writers who are following in award- winning columnist Candace Bushnell's footsteps to create a raunchy West Country equivalent to Sex and the City.

Sex and the Forest may at first appear like a more humdrum equivalent to the fast-paced, bed-hopping lifestyle of the Manhattan matrons who have captivated millions, but if you dig a little deeper, your fancy may be tickled by these rural raunchy tales.

The group of 10 writers were inspired to put pen to paper when they learned of an old traditional custom of 'fern tickets', the Forest's equivalent of the mile high club.

Couples earned their fictional fern tickets by disappearing into the woodlands for some al fresco frolics. Unlike Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica-Parker, who vows "shopping is her cardio" and totters around in ridiculous outfits and sky-high Manolo Blahniks, the stars of Sex and the Forest are more likely to sport Barbour jackets and wellies.

But their creative writing tutor Claire Hamilton says the unlikely setting does not prevent the book from being a riveting read chock-full of cheeky encounters.

on...

She challenged the brave writers in her class to capture a sex scene on paper as part of their course, and she was so impressed with the results she decided to put them into print.

The group of five men and five women are aged from 24 to their 60s and come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

But despite their obvious differences to the feisty four, the Foresters were not afraid of indulging in some sizzling sex scenes, taking their characters into woodland glades and other outdoor settings.

Claire said: "Creating a believable bedroom scene is one of the hardest things a writer has to do, because it is easy to veer into sentimental cliche or pornography.

"They were all giggling very nervously when they read out their work, but it was of such a high standard that I decided to put it into a
embroidered patches booklet.

"At least one of the stories is about stumbling across couples in an outdoor location, but not all of them are set in the Forest.

"The stories are by Forest writers, so they are imbued in the Forest. The stories are not coy, but I do not think they are offensive either."

The group meets every week in the Kavern Bar, a nightclub at the Angel Hotel, Coleford, which is run by aspiring novelist Ben Fullwood. He said: "I don't know if I would have dared to go there myself, but I'll definitely be joining the group next year!" Sex and the Forest costs Pounds 5.99 and will be launched at The Forest Bookshop, Coleford, on Wednesday, December 2, between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.
